N° 3383/DTN Rope N° 3383/DTN Rope

Open-pore Talc-finish ash

The special feature of this finish is the “talc” effect that consists in applying a white patina in the wood pores. It is achieved by applying a basecoat followed by a coat of patina that is then removed and fixed in the wood pores, in the raised parts and in the frames. It is applied in eight steps: a basecoat, a coat of patina, sanding, finishing and sealing of the patina. Available in the colours shown below and in RAL and NCS sample colours.

Frassino Tinto a poro aperto

Open-pore stained ash

This finish sets off the grain of ash wood, magnifying it and showing off its streaked beauty. It is achieved by applying the stain that is then removed and fixed inside the ash wood pores. It includes six steps: spraying the stain, removal, shading, spraying the transparent basecoat, sanding, finishing.

Frassino metallico

Metallic ash

This finish is achieved by using special coatings that are reminiscent of the colour and luminous reflection of metal. It is applied in two steps: a gloss lacquer basecoat is applied and then scratched to create a metallic effect. It is followed by a coat of metallic lacquer. The panel is then sanded to bring out the wood grain and finished with transparent varnish. Bronze, copper and titanium “metallic” lacquers are available.

Malta Ecologica

Ecological Mortar

This is an innovative, eco-compatible material that can be used to achieve a seamless surface. It comes from accurate, technological research and can be used on floors and claddings while fully respecting the environment. It is fireproof, non-flammable, breathable, frostproof, flexible, resistant to UV rays, water-repellent, recyclable, cement-free, epoxy resin free and does not contain substances toxic for human beings or for the environment. It is a single-component material and its agent is water. It can be applied outdoors but needs to be water-proofed and requires specific protective coatings. Thanks to our experience in making a multitude of handcrafted finishes for which manual skills and expertise are fundamental, we at Fratelli Cenedese apply ecological mortar to the surface of our furniture to create pairings with different and complementary materials, offering various aesthetic options for the many layouts showcased. We suggest using ecological mortar on accessories and distinguishing elements such as TV panels, the L-shaped door of TV/drinks wall units and other furniture parts as shown in this catalogue. Customised applications are also available on request. Ecological mortar is available in 4 colours.

Briccola di Venezia

Briccola piles from Venice

"Briccola" is the name Venetians give to clusters of two or three, partially submerged piles driven into the lagoon bed. These piles are used to mark off navigable canals in the Venetian lagoon. There is an estimated quantity of 60,000-90,000 Briccola piles in the Venetian lagoon. On average, they remain sound for 5-10 years. When they become rotten they are replaced to prevent detaching parts from becoming a danger hazard to boats sailing on the lagoon. The replacement of the rotten piles is regulated by the “Magistrato delle Acque” that is answerable to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. Specialised, authorised companies remove the old piles and put in the new ones. The main “creator” of the unique patterns and textures of the Briccola piles, together with the salt water, the wind and the temperature variations, is a small sea woodworm called the shipworm. Its work turns the wooden piles into a raw material acclaimed by the best designers in the world, perfect to make exclusive wooden furniture.

Material and dimensions

Briccola piles are made from European oak wood. On average, they are 10-15 metres long and have a diameter ranging from 35-50 cm. They are mainly sourced from FSC (correct forest stewardship and product traceability) and PEFC (sustainable national and regional forest stewardship) forests in France and Germany where the volume of timber is continuously expanding.

Processing

The log needs to be accurately prepared before it is ready to use. This entails a few, specific, steps:
• Cleaning: Removal of foreign matter by proper cleaning
• Selection: Cutting the piles to the sizes required to make the various products
 • Drying: The drying process gives the wood the required stability and enhances its characteristics produced by salt water corrosion. The pile can be further processed depending on how it will be used: to make parquet, claddings, doors, furniture and furnishings.

Applied by hand

Briccola Venezia veneer can be applied by hand to all our furniture surfaces including cabinets, shelves, tops, panels and bookcases, and paired with all the exterior finishes available in our sample book. It can be applied to matt lacquered and to lacquered ash veneer, stained or talc-finished ash surfaces.
It is applied by gluing a thin sheet of 0.6-mm thick wood veneer onto the furniture surface. Two types of finishes, ragged or natural, are available.

Ragged Briccola

How the ragged effect is achieved: after having lacquered or stained the surface, some of the coating is removed with a soft cloth. The surface of the Briccola veneer is cleared but the “pores” of the wood grain remain coated with the lacquer or stain applied earlier.

Natural Briccola

How the natural effect is achieved: The Briccola veneer is protected before coating the surface of the piece of
furniture it is applied to. After coating, most of the surface of the Briccola veneer is treated with an oil-based varnish while the edges are limed
to blend into the rest of the surface.
